At Huu in the Amansie Central District of the Ashanti Region, three minors were killed and numerous others were hospitalized when the vehicle they were riding in caught fire.
On Tuesday, June 13, the incident happened as the students were coming home from school.
Three students’ burned remains were found inside a Sprinter bus that was supposed to take them from Huu to the nearby town of Edwenase.
Initially, the students were riding in another bus due to a mechanical problem. They were consequently moved to the Sprinter bus, which regrettably contained flammable materials like diesel and gasoline stored in gallons.
Four of the students were saved by onlookers after the vehicle suddenly caught fire. The other three kids were caught and unable to flee the flames.
The victims have been identified as Justina Obeng, age five, Maame Mary, age six, and Isabella Danso, age two.
The incident happened around 5 o’clock, according to Assembly Member Daniel Agyenim Boateng for the Huu Electoral area.
“Around 5 pm, there was a passenger car from Obuasi toward Huu and there is a school in the area and so some children from the school’s bus developed a fault and so the passenger car was made to continue with the students to their destination and so when they sat in the car, it soon caught fire and killed the three and got others injured who are also receiving treatment at the St. Peters Hospital.”
He also mentioned that a woman who attempted to help the children is currently in critical condition after suffering severe burns.
The charred bodies have been placed in the morgue at St. Peters Hospital in Jacobu in the interim.
However, in order to aid in their investigations, police have detained and arrested both the vehicle’s owner and driver.
