Son of veteran Nigerian actor, John Okafor, popularly known as Mr. Ibu had a sham marriage with the actor’s adopted daughter, Jasmine Chioma Okekeagwu, according to latest Nigeria Police Force report.
Earlier on, InsightNewsgh.com reported that the Nigerian Police Force has arrested the the son and adopted daughter of Mr. Ibu on suspicion of stealing the ailing actor’s N50 million, which was obtained through donations intended to support the thespian’s failing health.
Onyeabuchi Okafor and Jasmine Chioma are accused of plotting to commit the crime, according to the Force through its Force Criminal Investigation and Intelligence Department, Alagbon, in Ikoyi, Lagos State.
The ailing thespian’s family disclosed in October 2023 that the star had undergone five surgeries and was in need of donations from his fans while he sought out additional treatment overseas.
But according to a statement released by the FCID on Thursday and signed by its public relations officer, Mayegun Amina, the arrest came in response to a petition that Diamond Waves Law filed on behalf of the actor Stella Okafor, claiming that two of Mr. Ibu’s sons had plotted with his adopted daughter, Jasmine, to defraud their father.
The Force revealed that its investigation revealed the suspects had Mr. Ibu’s son and his adopted daughter had a fraud marriage in order to obtain UK visa.
The Nigerian Police investigations uncovered the secret WhatsApp conversations between the actor’s son and Jasmine Chioma had – breathing out evil plans on how they conspired and hatched their criminal activities.
The Police adds that the duo intended to escape and settle in UK with the stolen donations money if they had succeeded in getting the visa.
“Investigation also unearthed text messages via WhatsApp between Jasmine and Daniel Okafor, detailing stage-by-stage how they conspired and hatched their criminal plans. It was also established that the two suspects, Jasmine Chioma Okekeagwu and Onyeabuchi Daniel Okafor, had a sham marriage at the Ikoyi Marriage Registry with plans to escape from the country to the UK, where they intended to settle with their proceeds of crime. They already applied for a UK visa in furtherance of this plan prior to their arrest,” the statement read.
According to the police, the two were charged with conspiracy and theft at Chief Magistrate Court 1, Yaba, under Charge No. A/06/2024.
A sham marriage is one in which the couple married for money or other reasons, not because they were in a true relationship.
