Unverified rumors claimed that 30 Israelis had been taken prisoner, and Israel confirmed that the mayor of the Shaar Hanegev Regional Council had been killed in one of the raids during a gunfight. In the southern town of Rahat, four Israelis perished as a result of rocket fire.
Mohammed Deif, the head of Hamas’ military wing, spoke this morning (Saturday) and admitted responsibility for the rocket attacks that were launched at Israel. Additionally, Islamic Jihad’s military wing is taking part in the offensive.

Deif continued, “This is a response to “crimes in Jerusalem, the confiscation of land, the expulsion of Palestinians from their homes, attacks on houses, and harassment of people in the West Bank, as well as the siege on Gaza.” He added that “the era of occupation without consequences has ended.”
Top Hamas figures were also visible in television images from other countries. “We thank Allah for this victory,” said Hamas leader Ismail Haniyeh. Alongside him, the terrorist strategist Saleh al-Arouri was also profiled.
