The New Patriotic Party (NPP) parliamentary candidate for the Akuapem North Constituency of the Eastern Region, Sammi Awuku has become a target of fake news and smear campaign ahead of the 2024 polls.

Quotes on fliers that have gone viral on various social media platforms, have been attributed the Director-General of the National Lottery Authority (NLA) believed to be from his political opponents and detractors.

One of such image-smearing campaigns from Kumasi-based Kapital Radio reads “We will win the election by strategy and not development. Ashanti and Eastern will do the magic. For the other regions we just share monies to them”

In response to some of the fake news, the Former National Organiser of the NPP said “Let’s debunk fake news together. A future free from misinformation is POSSIBLE!”

This come after a similar incident in which the Vice-Presidential Candidate of the NPP, Dr Mathew Opoku Prempeh alias NAPO was also targeted.

Mr. Fiifi Boafo, his spokesperson however refuted a viral report attributed to his boss, claiming he made inflammatory statements against the Ga and Ewe ethnic groups.

The post circulating on social media alleged that NAPO had said, “Gas and Ewes are the problems of Ghana” and suggested that “historically, they should not have been part of Ghana.”

In response, Fiifi Boafo took to Facebook to dismiss the report as baseless and warned the public against falling for such misinformation.

“I understand that in today’s digital world, especially during an election year, people are eager to catch up on the latest news,” he began, pointing out the heightened curiosity around political figures and the spreading of unverified information.
