In what appears to be an attempt to subdue the New Patriotic Party(NPP) Parliamentary Candidate in the Akuapem North Constituency of the Eastern Region, Mr. Samuel Awuku, top guns of the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC) led by its National Chairman, Johnson Asiedu Nketiah have intensified campaigns in the area.

The NDC leadership spent several days in the Constituency visiting communities and interacting with various youth groups with the sole aim of getting them to reject the former National Organiser of the NPP as their lawmaker in the 2024 polls.

They took their campaign to Pokrom, Mamfe, Kwamoso, Nsutam, Adukrom and others trumpeting why Mr Sammi Awuku must be blocked from entering parliament.

It is gathered that the latest campaign strategy is aimed at keeping the Director General of the National Lottery Authority (NLA) busy in the constituency to sway him from playing a critical role in Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia’s campaign nationally.

Mr Asiedu Nketiah while addressing supporters in the area said “Sammi Awuku doesn’t deserve your votes because after taking your betting taxes and sharing small with you, he wants to be MP” He alleged “after looting enough state monies and knowing they will lose the election, Sammi Awuku is now running to you to be voted for to be an MP. Vote against Bawumia and Sammy Awuku. Vote for your Parliamentary Candidate Hon. John Evans Kumordzi who is the reincarnation of Prof. John Evans Atta Mills”

Justifying why the NPP must be voted out of power, the NDC National Chairman said: “This year we have decided not to organise big rallies but rather take the campaign to the people. This year’s election is not about NPP and NDC rather it is about saving our country from the hands of the oppressor who has destroyed the country.

“Currently, a newly born baby owes GHC2000 and so if we sit and do nothing about we will have our country destroyed by these people. If Ghana was a human being he would have been likened with someone who is highly indebted but cannot pay back his loans. If you go to every house for a loan they say they can’t give you because you don’t pay your debt. Ghana has been disgraced globally.

“However, I know that when the country is destroyed the people of Ghana call on the NDC to help salvage the situation. When Rawlings came to power it was just like this and he came to work to make things better. Rawlings will be shaking in his grave anywhere he is.

“That all the work he came to do to build this country and the fight against corruption, what is happening currently in the country is appalling. However, if Rawlings is gone, his followers are here and we will make things right. If we leave this country, things will go bad. This is not how democracy is practised”

    Akuapem North Results in 2020

In the 2020 elections, the NPP won the Akuapem North Constituency in both the presidential and parliamentary elections.

President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo polled 33,553 votes representing 70.27% as against 13,851 votes representing 29.01 for John Dramani Mahama.
