Avril Ramona Lavigne Plomb (born September 27, 1984) is a Canadian singer-songwriter, actress, and record label executive. She was born in Belleville, Ontario, and grew up in Napanee. Lavigne began performing as a child at country fairs and karaoke competitions. At the age of 15, she was discovered by songwriter and record executive L.A. Reid at a mall in Kingston, Ontario. Reid was impressed by her voice and stage presence, and he also signed her to a recording contract with Arista Records.
Lavigne’s debut album, Let Go, was released in 2002 and was a commercial and critical success. The album sold over 16 million copies worldwide and produced four hit singles, including “Complicated,” “Sk8er Boi,” “I’m With You,” and “Losing Grip.” Lavigne’s subsequent albums, Under My Skin (2004), The Best Damn Thing (2007), Goodbye Lullaby (2011), Avril Lavigne (2013), Head Above Water (2019), and also Love Sux (2022), were also commercially successful, although they did not achieve the same level of critical acclaim as Let Go.
In addition to her music career, Lavigne has also appeared in several films, including Fast Food Nation (2006), The Flock (2008), and Horton Hears a Who! (2008). She has also launched her own clothing line, Abbey Dawn, and her own fragrance line, Forbidden Rose.
