National Democratic Congress’ (NDC) Deputy Director of Communications for the Bono Region, Eric Adjei, has sent strong words of caution to management of United Television (UTV) following the publication of false news about it’s flagbearer, John Mahama.
Recall, in 2023, UTV published a news article which suggested that former president John Mahama had insulted Ashantis.
The quote is said to put Mahama in a bad light attacking the people of the Ashanti region.
Following this, Mahama’s campaign team issued a statement to demand a retraction and apology from UTV after the fake news went viral on social media which was circulated by some NPP activists.
“[Former] President Mahama has not made any such statement, either on his campaign rounds or to UTV.” a statement published by his Spokesperson Joyce Bawa Mogtari said.
In a response, UTV rendered an apology to the former president John Mahama and the members of the NDC for sharing false news which damaged the reputation of Mahama and the people of NDC.
During an interview on UTV, Eric Adjei stressed that the NDC won’t tolerate such things from UTV again.
According to him, if UTV publishes any such fake news about Mahama especially when in this election year, the NDC will blacklist them from reporting anything about the party.
Mr. Eric Adjei said even though UTV has apologized, in politics such things are seen as a deliberate action.
“We are telling you this time, we don’t come here and beat you like NPP did, but if you continue to publish fake news, we won’t work with you again.” he said.
The NDC Deputy Director of Communications continued, “If you are willing to work with us then you should give accurate information. If not because of the good relationship we have with some people here, we would have boycotted coming to your studio. You couldn’t report about the 24-hour economy Mahama has been projecting during his campaign tour in the Volta Region, you were reporting on fake story.”
