Sidney Powell is an American attorney, former federal prosecutor, and conspiracy theorist who attempted to overturn the 2020 United States presidential election. She is the founder of Defending the Republic, a conservative legal organization.
Powell was born in Durham, North Carolina, and grew up in Raleigh. She received her undergraduate and law degrees from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. After law school, Powell worked as an assistant United States attorney in the Western District of Texas. She later served as a senior partner at a Dallas law firm.
Powell also became known for her aggressive defense of Flynn and her public attacks on the special counsel’s investigation.
After the 2020 presidential election, Powell joined the legal team of then-President Donald Trump in an attempt to overturn the results of the election. Powell made numerous false and unsubstantiated claims about widespread voter fraud. She also filed lawsuits in several states challenging the election results. However, all of her lawsuits were dismissed by the courts.
In December 2020, the State Bar of Texas filed disciplinary charges against Powell, alleging that she violated professional conduct rules by making false statements about the election.
