Sir Keir Rodney Starmer KCB KC (born 2 September 1962) is a British politician and barrister who has served as Leader of the Opposition and Leader of the Labour Party since 2020. He has been Member of Parliament (MP) for Holborn and St Pancras since 2015. He was previously Director of Public Prosecutions from 2008 to 2013.
Starmer was born in London and raised in Surrey, where he attended the selective state Reigate Grammar School. He studied law at the University of Leeds and St Edmund Hall, Oxford. After graduating, he worked as a barrister, specialising in human rights and public law. He was appointed Queen’s Counsel in 2002.
In 2008, Starmer was also appointed Director of Public Prosecutions. He was the first person to hold this position without having been a judge. During his time as DPP, he oversaw a number of high-profile cases, including the prosecution of phone hackers and the investigation into the death of Jean Charles de Menezes.
Starmer also resigned as DPP in 2013 to enter politics. He was elected MP for Holborn and St Pancras in the 2015 general election. He was appointed Shadow Secretary of State for Exiting the European Union in 2016. I
