The largest opposition National Democratic Congress have held a conference on the state of Ghana’s economy to address some key issues.
During the conference, the NDC through its Minority Leader, Dr. Ato Forson has issued a 21-day ultimatum to the Governor of Bank of Ghana to resign after recording staggering ¢60.8bn loss in 2022.
According to him, the Governor of Bank Of Ghana has breached the law based on Section 30 and 60 of the Bank of Ghana Amendment Act.
He explained the Governor of Bank Of Ghana can only print to support government expenditure using 5% of previous year revenue as the benchmark.
However, Dr. Ernest Addison has used 7.2% of GDP growth which is over 30% of last year’s revenue which according to Dr Cassiel Ato Forson, the Governor of Bank Of Ghana deliberately did it.
“We call for the immediate resignation of the Governor of the Central Bank and his deputies within 21 days from today,” the Minority Leader demanded.
This follows the Central Bank’s disclosure that it suffered a loss of GH60.8 billion in 2022 in its Annual Report and Financial Statements.
He stated that the bank has almost completely collapsed and accused the governor of managing the bank incompetently.
He asserted that the Governor recklessly mismanaged the Central Bank, bringing it to its knees, and that he is no longer qualified to serve as the bank’s leader without being held responsible.
“Those who have led these reckless and criminal conduct, unleashed economic hardship and financial distress on the suffering people of Ghana, must be held accountable for this particular action. In fact, impunity of the highest order can no longer be tolerated by the suffering masses of Ghanaians. We must not allow dangerous precedents to be set for future leaders,” he added.
Dr. Ato Forson asserts that the NDC is prepared to take appropriate action if the governor and his deputies fail to heed his request.
“We are resolved to embark on popular action to occupy the Central Bank and drive out the team of inept, callous and criminally minded mismanagers of our finances to save the Bank of Ghana,” he said.
The Minority Leader added that the NDC will ensure “that a march to ensure accountability will begin in 21 days if the Governor of the Bank of Ghana does not do the needful and pack bag and baggage out of that sacred institution that he has unfortunately mismanaged.”
“Dr Ernest Addison and his deputies must go, there has to be an end to this impunity now!”
