The Ghana Union of Traders Association (GUTA) has called for a total reform in the implementation of the Value Added Tax (VAT) to enhance compliance. GATU’s call follows the implementation of the increase in the VAT rate from 12.5% to 15% effective January 1, 2023. Finance Minister, Ken Ofori-Atta had indicated that the increase is expected to yield GH¢2.70 billion, which will be used to augment funding for road infrastructure development. A third of the global economy will be in recession this year, the head of the International Monetary Fund (IMF) has warned. Kristalina Georgieva said 2023 will be “tougher” than last year as the US, EU and China see their economies slow. It comes as the war in Ukraine, rising prices, higher interest rates and the spread of Covid in China weigh on the global economy. The National Sports Authority is open to the possibility of renaming a stadium in Ghana after the football legend, Pele, who passed away aged 82. This is according to the Director General of the Authority, Professor Peter Twumasi. Child prostitution menace in Koforidua has increased by 40% in Koforidua, the Eastern Regional capital. Some of the girls are recruited into the illicit act by some adult pimps to exploit them for financial gains. The Ghana National Fire Service (GNFS) has revealed that a total of 624 fire incidents were recorded in December 2022 as compared to 567 in the same period of 2021, representing an increase of 10.1%. A statement issued by the service on New Year’s Day said “also 210 and 153 out-on-arrival cases were recorded respectively for December 2022 and December 2021, representing an increase of 37.3%.” No casualties were recorded in all these fires. “However, 12 road traffic collision incidents responded to resulted in 34 injuries and two deaths in the last seven days of December 2022,” the statement added.…
