Popular Ghanaian Youtiber, Ama Governor, has been denied a call to the bar, and Chief Justice Gertrude Torkornoo has outlined her justifications.

Despite graduating from the Ghana School of Law and passing her interview, the Ghanaian YouTuber who goes by the name Elorm Ababio was not admitted to the bar in November 2022.

Later, it was revealed that the General Legal Council had postponed her call to the Bar pending the conclusion of a committee tasked with judging whether she was worthy or not.

Ama Governor was informed by the General Legal Council’s secretary about a petition from a concerned citizen accusing her of lacking the moral character necessary for someone aspiring to be a lawyer.

Ama Governor’s YouTube video was criticized by an unnamed concerned citizen who called it “conduct unbecoming of an application to be called to the Bar.” On social media, this has sparked an ongoing debate.

A three-member committee has reportedly been established by the General Legal Council to look into the complaint; the committee’s findings will determine the fate of the well-known YouTuber.

Ama Governor, however, missed the call to the Ghana Bar once more in May 2023 when the Ghana Legal Council, following her initial rejection, called new attorneys to the Ghana Bar in a Mini Call.

Yesterday, Chief Justice Gertrude Torkornor clarified the issues in her remarks at a program. She claims she is surprised by how little people appear to comprehend the Ghana Legal Council’s position.

She said “when somebody has behaved in a certain way we say and we say we cannot call the person to the Bar, I was surprised at the furriery that rose up concerning the call to the bar of certain people, like seriously?

“This is proper conduct for the legal sector. That’s interesting. Anyway, so for you to come into our space and to come into the space of the legal sector, your conduct cannot be obscene and offensive and you expect that you’ll be admitted. It doesn’t work like that.

Your comments on social media, your ex parte communications for Judges is extremely critical,” in the viral video below, she makes this point.
