John Dumelo – an actor, farmer, and former parliamentary candidate for the National Democratic Congress (NDC), in the Ayawaso West Wuogon constituency has sent an indication to Lydia Seyram Alhassan, Member of Parliament (MP) of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), for the constituency that she will be the next to lose after James Gyakye Quayson’s victory in the Assin North by-election.

“Lydia Seyram Alhassan. Your downfall is next!’” Dumelo posted on his Facebook page.

This comes after officials of the Electoral Commission declared James Gyakye Quayson of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) as the winner of the Assin North by-election.

Mr. Quayson polled 17,245 votes representing 57.56 percent of the total votes cast to beat Charles Opoku of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), and Bernice Enyonam Sefenu of the Liberal Party of Ghana (LPG).

Charles Opoku polled 12,630 votes representing 42.15 percent of the total votes cast in the hotly contested by-election while the LPG’s Bernice Enyonam Sefenu polled a paltry 87 votes (0.29%).

In 2020, Mrs Lydia Seyram Alhassan retained her seat as NPP Member of Parliament for the constituency after polling 39,851 out of 77,604 total votes.

Her closest opponent, actor John Dumelo, received 37,778 votes, while an independent candidate received 108. 595 out of the total votes were rejected.

Prior to the election, Madam Alhassan predicted that she would receive 60% of the vote, but Dumelo, her opponent, asked the public to ignore rumors on social media that he was losing the contest.

“They are appreciative of the work that we have done, and for me, I have been an MP for less than two years and they have seen my good works. My signature is all over the place and so for them, they are renewing my mandate and that of President Akufo-Addo,” she said.

She took the place of her deceased husband, Emmanuel Boakye Agyarko when she campaigned for and won the parliamentary seat in the Ayawaso West Wuogon Constituency by-election in January 2019
