The deceased’s family has denied media reports that Christian Kwame Amuzu, a former assemblyman for the Nogokpo-Ativuta Electoral Area in the Ketu South Municipality of the Volta Region, committed suicide.
The late former assemblyman’s elder brother, Torgbi Atsu Gledza, told the Ghana News Agency (GNA) that he was a hale and hearty man who had never complained of an illness or other problems before his mysterious death.
The respected and successful businessman allegedly committed suicide, according to earlier reports, but the family believes there was more to the sudden death than is being assumed.
“C. K is a prominent member of our society, a successful businessman, known widely in political circles – this is a man who has made it in life. In fact, with his position and status in the society, we do not believe he can take his own life – there is something more to his death than is being reported,” Torgbi Gledza said.
The late assemblyman’s wife, according to reliable sources, did not spend the night at home before his death that fateful morning, and earlier claims that she dropped their kids off at school were far from the truth, according to information the family has so far gathered.
Residents of the neighborhood were in shock and disbelief when they discovered the deceased’s body hanging on a rope in his living room in the early hours of Wednesday, June 14. They had no idea what might have caused his mysterious death.
“I met with him just yesterday [Tuesday] – as you know, the local assembly elections are just around the corner and so we had some discussions as to how best to position myself for the election and some other matters relating to the progress of the electoral area. He is someone who really has the interest of the area at heart – it’s really shocking — I just can’t believe it,” Mr Agbagba lamented.
The area’s current assemblyman, Mr. Jonas Fotor Agbagba, told the GNA that he had met with the deceased former assemblyman the day before the incident and that they had spoken about the electoral district.
The sudden passing of the former assemblyman, according to him, was a huge loss for the Nogokpo-Ativuta electoral district.
Many people in the electorate that the GNA spoke with described the late former assemblyman as a kind and loving person who had helped many locals pursue higher education, given support for the livelihood of the women folk, and provided employment to many young people.
He is said to be one of the NDC’s top financial backers in the Ketu South constituency and an enthusiastic supporter of the party.
Party supporters have called his untimely death “a big loss” to the NDC in the constituency.
Members of the NDC in the constituency were in complete shock following his sudden death.
Since the incident, they have flocked to his home in droves to offer their condolences to the grieving family.
