The discovery of Christian Kwame Amuzu’s dead body, a former assemblyman for the Nogokpo-Ativuta electoral area, has shocked the people of Yelibato, a community close to Nogokpo in the Ketu South Municipality of the Volta Region.
Early on June 14, 2023, the 60-year-old’sbodywas discovered hanging from a rope in his living room.
The late Assemblyman’s wife, Madam Baby Amuzu, told the Ghana News Agency (GNA) that her husband had not previously voiced any complaints.
She claimed that while it had been the deceased’s custom to drive their children to school every morning, on the fateful day he had asked her to do so without providing a justification.
She claimed that after dropping off the kids at school, she came home to discover the deceased hanging from a rope in their living room.
The deceased’s meeting with the current Assemblyman for the area, Mr. Jonas Fotor Agbagba, took place just one day prior to the incident, and they discussed the electoral area’s progress. Mr. Agbagba questioned what might have caused the deceased to commit suicide.
“I met with him just yesterday – as you know, the local Assembly elections are just around the corner and so we had some discussions as to how best to position myself for the election and other matters relating to the progress of the electoral area.
“He is someone who really has the interest of the area at heart – I just can’t believe he could do this to himself,” Mr Agbagba lamented.
Many locals are now questioning whether the unfortunate incident had anything to do with the recent standoff between the chiefs and people of Nogokpo and Archbishop Charles Agyinasare, the founder and general overseer of the Perez Chapel International, and the strange passing of the former Assemblyman.
While the Agbozume Police Command started its investigation into the incident, the deceased’s body had been deposited at the Sacred Heart morgue in Abor.
