Four suspects have been detained, according to the Ghana Police Service, in connection with a viral video that showed a group of men stripping and molesting a woman in public.
Following an initial investigation into the aforementioned video, the suspects were apprehended at Kupelga in the Upper East Region in the early hours of Tuesday, June 13, 2023, during a Police intelligence operation.
The suspects, Awizore Amolt, Akolbila Asorwogo, Atibila Aladago, and Akolbila Ben, are in custody and assisting the investigation, according to a statement from the police, who added that efforts are ongoing to apprehend additional conspirators.
“We are in touch with the victim and her family and arrangements have been made for a Police clinical psychologist to provide her psycho-social support,” the statement posted on the official Facebook page of the law enforcement agency said.
The woman, who is said to be of Fulani descent, was partially naked in the viral video that led to the arrest of the suspects before she was completely undressed, exposing her full nakedness while some men gathered around her beat and molested her.
The allegedly from Zebilla in the Upper East Region, the video sparked widespread condemnation and calls for the perpetrators to be promptly apprehended and prosecuted.
In response to the development, security analyst Adib Saani stated that such incidents pose a serious threat to national security.
“This is a very dangerous move by the youth of the area as it feeds into the terrorist narrative. Terrorists love to see these because they exploit them to create a motive to stage attacks.
“This incident is more or less a VIP invite to terrorists. Attacking women and children amounts to crossing the red line.
“I am concerned as a security stakeholder because this could cause reprisals,” he is quoted as saying.
According to reports, the Fulani community leadership in Ghana had been searching for the married mother of two since the saddening development however, she and her family have moved ostensibly due to trauma and shame.
