Former Environment, Science, Technology, and Innovation Minister Kwabena Frimpong-Boateng is being investigated by the Office of the Special Prosecutor (OSP).
The renowned heart surgeon was subject to an investigation after accepting an invitation from the Office a few weeks prior.
He was invited for his report on the disbanded Inter-Ministerial Committee on Illegal Mining (IMCIM), which focused on corruption and activities related to it.
Additionally, he was detained for his alleged role in the disappearance of 500 excavators and Symphony Limited, his son’s business, engaging in illegal mining.
After his alleged arrest, he was given bail in the amount of Gh2 million right away.
In a statement on Tuesday, May 2, the Special Prosecutor had pledged to take “necessary action” against everyone named in the IMCIM report written by Prof. Frimpong-Boateng.
“The OSP welcomes the calls for action and investigations and it assures the public and civil society that its investigation is ongoing and far-reaching and it also covers the matters raised in the report published by the head of the dissolved IMCIM,” the Office said in its statement last month.
“The OSP will take necessary action against all persons deemed culpable of corruption and corruption-related offences in the mining sector.”
The Office announced in October 2022 that it would look into allegations of corruption and crimes related to corruption in the illegal mining industry.
As Prof. Frimpong-Boateng has been the subject of similar accusations, he has been invited to participate in the investigations as a witness and as a third party.
