NDC Primaries Brouhaha: Kojo Bonsu Supports Duffuor’s Court Injunction On Saturday Elections

Kojo Bonsu, a flagbearer candidate for the National Democratic Congress (NDC), is concerned about some irregularities he claims are present in the party’s voter list.

According to him, these suspected infractions have the propensity to affect the primaries set for Saturday, May 13, 2023.

His worries follow a writ that Dr. Kwabena Duffuor filed at an Accra High Court alleging that the party failed to deliver the necessary photo album register five weeks prior to the elections as required by the party’s rules.

He claimed that rather than in March when they had requested one, a partial photo album register was given to his team on May 4, a few days before the elections.

The party’s upcoming presidential and parliamentary primaries scheduled for Saturday, May 13, were requested to be postponed by the former finance minister.

This opinion is shared by Mr. Kojo Bonsu. The former mayor of Kumasi said that this will give plenty of time to fix the issue with the party’s electoral roll during an interview on Kumasi-based OTEC FM.

“They have to postpone the date of the election and rectify it [the alleged anomalies in the album]”, Kojo Bonsu said on Tuesday evening.

If the party disregards this issue and goes ahead with the May 13 election, in his opinion, the party runs the risk of facing additional legal actions.

In a related news, the NDC intends to hold presidential and parliamentary primaries, but the Electoral Commission of Ghana (EC) has given notice that it will not oversee those elections.

According to the EC, this is because of the legal problems that have plagued the primaries scheduled for May 13, 2023.

The EC chairperson claims that the decision was made to avoid the commission being found in contempt.

“In order that we are not cited for contempt, the Commission has taken the decision not to supervise the conduct of the Presidential and Parliamentary elections until after the determination of the case by the court,” citinewsroom.com quoted Jean Mensah during a meeting held on Wednesday, May 10.
