Vice President, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia has revealed government to digitize taxi and trotro operations in Ghana.
Speaking at a meeting, Dr. Bawumia said very soon taxi and trotro drivers will be enrolled into the digital platform just like the Yango, Bolt and Uber drivers.
In his speech, Dr. Bawmua who has finally declared his intentions to lead the New Patriotic Party to break the 8 in the 2024 general elections said some commercial drivers paid a courtesy call on him.
According to him, at the meeting with the concern drivers, they pointed out that the introduction of the digital transport system has collapsed their businesses in the sense that people nowadays prefer to take Uber and Bolt than hire a taxi or pick trotro for the sake of their safety.
The Vicce President said his team are currently working on getting all commercial vehicles onto the same digital platform as Uber drivers for a fair competition.
“I’m happy to say that the work has now been completed and in the next couple of months, we’ll be able to place out taxis at least in Greater Accra to start with all in an Uber like platform. And you will be able to call them just like you call Ubers to your homes,” Dr. Bawumia said.
He further added that once they are done with taxis, the next target to get trotro drivers both the public and private transport sectors to go on the same ‘Tap and Go system.’
He also announced that just as the citizens of England have the Oyster cards, before the end of the year 2023 Ghanaians will also have the Oyster cards for easy transport.
