The three new tax bills recently passed by Parliament in March 2023 have been signed into law by Ghana’s President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo.
In an interview with JoyNews, Information Minister Kojo Oppong Nkrumah reaffirmed this.
He claims that the document has since been delivered to the Clerk of Parliament, allowing the remaining administrative procedures to begin.
“From there, there will be the necessary transmittals before the Ghana Revenue Authority can commence implementation.”
The Excise Duty Amendment Bill 2022, the Growth and Sustainability Levy Bill, and the Income Tax Amendment Bill 2022 are the three new taxes.
The majority in parliament claimed that the initiative was a part of efforts to generate GHC 4 billion in annual revenue.
Additionally, according to the government, the bills are crucial to obtaining the $3 million bailout it is requesting from the International Monetary Fund (IMF).
An MP from the majority had a near-fatal accident on his way to the House, but the bills were still passed despite the minority’s earlier communication of opposition.
Recently, Mohammed Hardi Tufeiru, a member of parliament for Nanton emphasized the significance of the three new tax bills.
He claimed that in order to get to Parliament and assist the government in passing the bills because they were so crucial, he had to overcome a horrifying accident.
Mr. Hardi Tufeiru even went so far as to say in an interview with Citi FM that the bills were more important than his life.
He recalled how an Uber had taken him from the scene of the accident to Parliament, adding that as he was making his way there to cast a vote, some colleagues noticed his condition and took him to the restroom to get help.
He received a number of injections before having a deep cut made at the top right corner of his eye.
He reiterated his desire to be present in the chamber to vote on the three bills in the midst of all of this.
