The National Chairman of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), Johnson Asiedu Nketia, and John Mahama have been requested to be detained by the police for their statements that party members are ready to give their lives to win the 2024 elections, according to Justin Frimpong Kodua, the general secretary of the New Patriotic Party (NPP).
He declared that the two NDC gentlemen’s remarks needed to be considered treasonous.
His responses follow the NDC’s demand that Bryan Acheampong, a lawmaker from Abetifi and minister of foods and agriculture, be detained without delay and charged with treason for remarks he made.
He said “The NPP will never hand over power to the NDC.”
On Saturday, April 8, 2023, Acheampong addressed party supporters in Mpraeso and vowed that the current administration would employ all necessary measures to maintain power in 2024.
In response to the remarks, the NDC attacked the MP in a statement, accusing him of inciting irrationality to skew the results of the upcoming elections.
The NPP, according to Justin Kodua Frimpong, finds the NDC’s statement to be not only ill-founded, hypocritical, illogical, and baseless, but also lacking in contextual substance for the consumption of the astute Ghanaians who are aware of the main opposition party’s strategy of purposefully giving a diabolical and cunning slant to an otherwise innocent comment made by the Member of Parliament in order to further their own selfish political interests.
He claimed that the NDC’s history of using violence and intimidation to intimidate their opponents during general elections was well-expressed by John Dramani Mahama, the NDC’s presumptive presidential candidate for 2024.
He has categorically stated: ‘NDC has revolutionary root, and that when it comes to unleashing violence, nobody can beat us [NDC] in unleashing violence’.
He added that Johnson Asiedu Nketia, the NDC’s national chairman, and other influential party members had made similar threatening and defamatory remarks. In fact, Asiedu Nketia declared in his victory speech after being elected National Chairman that the NDC would fight the 2024 general elections to win a second independence for Ghana and that they would give anything, even their lives, to achieve this goal.
