Former General Secretary of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), John Boadu, has officially announced his intention to contest for the position of the Party’s National Chairman when nominations open for national leadership elections in 2026.

“I, John Boadu, wish to officially declare my intention to contest for the position of National Chairman of the New Patriotic Party in 2026 when the nomination for National leadership is opened,” he spoke in a carefully crafted statement released on Saturday, November 8, 2025.

Mr. Boadu believes the NPP is at a “critical crossroads” following its defeat in the last general elections. He stressed that the party needs “experienced, tested, and unifying leadership” to rebuild and position itself for victory in 2028.

He warned that the NPP had drifted away from vital groups that once proudly carried the party’s flag, naming the youth, business community, middle class, clergy, and academia among those whose confidence in the party has weakened.

“Our party has drifted away from vital groups that once proudly carried the NPP flag. We cannot afford to remain in opposition for long. There is hope for restoration, but that hope rests in leadership with proven experience and the capacity to deliver results,” he said.

He added that his decision followed consultations with party elders, executives, and grassroots members across the country.

    The Five-Pillar Strategy

Mr. Boadu outlined five main areas that would guide his campaign: reconciliation and unity, rebuilding and rebranding the party, strengthening internal structures and security, sustainable resource mobilization, and modernizing campaign strategies using technology and data.

“The NPP needs to be rescued. Power is won when the party is strong and guided by tried and tested leadership. This is not a time for experiments,” he said.

If elected, Mr. Boadu said his leadership would focus on:

Reconciliation and Unity: Healing divisions and rebuilding trust within the party.

Rebuilding and Rebranding: Restoring public confidence, reconnecting with grassroots members, and strengthening communication with both traditional and digital media.

Empowering Party Structures: Ensuring all party organs function effectively and protecting electoral interests through robust internal security.

Resource Mobilization: Establishing transparent and reliable funding mechanisms to maintain party activity at all levels.

Reviving the Winning Machinery: Modernizing election campaigns with data analytics, IT infrastructure, digital tools, influencers, and AI-driven strategies to secure future victories.

The former General Secretary highlighted his extensive experience within the party, spanning over 30 years. He rose through the ranks from polling station chairman to the highest administrative position in the NPP. He emphasized his role in several key achievements, including leading the party to its highest electoral votes, 6.7 million, in 2020, and securing its largest parliamentary majority in 2016.

“The 2028 elections will be crucial for the NPP’s survival. At this decisive moment, we cannot afford to gamble with leadership. The NPP needs stability, tolerance, and a results-oriented vision that will unite all factions and restore our great party to power,” Mr. Boadu said

In his statement, Mr. Boadu reflected on the current challenges facing the party. He noted a weakened parliamentary presence, with the NPP holding 87 seats, down from 169 in 2016 and 137 in 2020.

He also raised concerns about punitive actions against party members, including arrests and bail conditions, as well as job dismissals affecting youth who once had opportunities under previous NPP administrations.

He argued that restoring hope and opportunities for Ghanaians would require winning back political power.

“Only through victory can we rebuild opportunities for our people and secure the dignity of Ghanaians,” he said.

Mr. Boadu said that his decades-long experience positions him to lead the NPP effectively. He compared the leadership of the party to historical examples from the Bible, noting that tested and experienced leaders are essential in times of challenge.

“I have led the NPP to victory at moments when hope was lost and unity was strained. I understand the science, structure, and soul of this Party and, of course, understand the strategies of winning elections,” he said.

He also cited his achievements in strengthening party structures and election management, including the pioneering of the Pink Sheet Tracking System, sending monthly subventions to every constituency and region, and helping the NPP collate election results in record times.

Mr. Boadu emphasized that the NPP’s success depends on unity, discipline, and experienced leadership. He called on party members to rally behind a vision that can restore the party to power.

“This storm will surely pass. Together, we shall make NPP great again and we will win the 2028 elections,” he said, concluding his statement.

The former General Secretary’s announcement marks the beginning of what is expected to be a competitive race for the NPP National Chairmanship, as the party prepares to reorganize and strategize for the next general elections.
