The Vice President, Professor Naana Jane Opoku-Agyemang, has returned home in good health after weeks of medical treatment in the United Kingdom.
Confirming her arrival, the spokesperson to the President, Felix Kwakye Ofosu said the Vice President arrived in Ghana in the afternoon of Thursday, May 22, 2025.
“Vice President Naana Jane Opoku-Agyemang this afternoon returned home from London, United Kingdom, where she traveled for medical treatment”, Ofosu-Kwakye noted.
In a brief address at the airport, Vice President Opoku-Agyemang expressed her gratitude to Ghanaians for their prayers and support. She also thanked her medical team at UGMC, and praised President Mahama and his younger brother, Ibrahim Mahama, for their care and encouragement during her recovery. Her return marks the end of a three-week medical leave she took following an illness that began in late March.
Her arrival at the Kotoka International Airport brought relief and joy to many Ghanaians who had been concerned about her wellbeing.
President John Dramani Mahama and First Lady Lordina Mahama, along with several top government officials were at the Kotoka International Airport to welcome the Vice President.
Among the tall list of senior government officials were the Chief of Staff Julius Debrah, Finance Minister Dr. Cassiel Ato Forson, and her own Chief of Staff, Alex Segbefia.
Members of the Vice President’s family and the Presiding Bishop of the Methodist Church were also present to warmly welcome her.
The Vice President was first admitted to the University of Ghana Medical Centre (UGMC) on March 29, 2025, a day after falling ill. However, details of her condition were not publicly disclosed
Doctors later recommended that she travel abroad for further medical care. Following their advice, she left Ghana on April 7 for the UK, where she underwent treatment and eventually made a full recovery.
Rumors had been circulating about her health, with some members of the public even speculating that she had passed away. However, government officials, including spokesperson Felix Kwakye Ofosu, consistently assured Ghanaians that she was in good health and would return soon.
President Mahama shared the good news during a stop on his “Thank You Tour” in Dodowa, Greater Accra Region.
“I’m happy to state that I spoke to her yesterday morning, and she will be back in the country before the end of next week. By God’s grace, she is fully recovered and she’s going to come and go back to her duties,” he said.
Now back on her feet, Vice President Naana Jane Opoku-Agyemang is ready to resume her duties, bringing renewed energy and commitment to serve the nation.
