    Asantehene Destools Ohwimhene

The Asantehene, Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, has destooled the Chief of Ohwim, Nana Kusi Baaye II, following multiple allegations, including illegal mining and extortion.

The decision was made during a Kumasi Traditional Council sitting on Monday, February 24, 2025.

According to live news reports, Nana KusiBaaye II, who served as Ohwimhene for 16 years, faced accusations of unauthorized land sales, including cemetery lands, and misuse of his authority in chieftaincy matters.

The case was initially brought before the traditional council over his alleged invocation of the Asantehene’s Great Oath (Ntamkese), an act deemed deceitful and violation of the Golden Stool.

During the proceedings, more allegations emerged against him.

His own family head and royal family members testified that he had falsely used the name of the Asantehene to sell family lands, only to later allocate them for illegal mining operations.

His sister further accused him of misleading the family by claiming that lands were being taken for a solar project, when in reality, he had allowed illegal mining activities on the site.

“You vowed with the Great Oath to be truthful, but you went against it. You don’t deserve to stay on the stool. Many have sacrificed to protect the Golden Stool, and I won’t allow you to destroy it,” the Asantehene declared during the session.

Additionally, Nana KusiBaaye II was accused of opposing the enstoolment of a queen and neglecting his traditional responsibilities, claiming he had converted to Christianity. His refusal to perform required rites further fueled the demand for his destoolment by the Kumasi Traditional Council’s divisions.

With overwhelming evidence and testimonies against him, the council members unanimously backed his removal.

The Asantehene’s final verdict was based on his violation of the Great Oath, reinforcing his stance on upholding traditional authority and preserving the dignity of the Golden Stool.

Despite the ruling, Nana KusiBaaye II maintains his innocence, insisting that the charges brought against him are false.

However, his destoolment stands, marking another significant enforcement of Asante traditions under the leadership of Otumfuo Osei Tutu II.
