Personal Life
Lloyd Alton Doggett II was born on October 6, 1946, in Austin, Texas, U.S. He is an American attorney and politician, also currently serving as a U.S. representative from Texas.
A member of the Democratic Party, he has represented a district based in Austin since 1995, currently numbered as Texas’s 37th congressional district. Doggett graduated with honors from the University of Texas at Austin, where he earned both a bachelor’s degree in business administration and a Juris Doctor degree. While at UT Austin, he served as student body president and was a member of the Lambda Chi Alpha fraternity.
Career
He authored significant legislation in Texas, including the creation of the Texas Commission on Human Rights and laws related to cop killer bullets and also government agency review. Doggett served as a member of the Texas Senate from 1973 to 1985. He gained attention as part of the “Killer Bees”, a group of Democratic state senators who also opposed moving the state’s presidential primary to favor a Republican candidate. In 1989, he became an Associate Justice of the Texas Supreme Court. And also an adjunct professor at the University of Texas School of Law. Since 1995, he has been a strong defender of Social Security, Medicare, health care, immigration reform, the environment, veterans, and public education.
Doggett has received several awards, including the Congressional Champion for Real and Lasting Change Award from Save the Children. He is also known for his commitment to historic preservation and has been recognized. By Austin Chronicle readers with multiple “Best of Austin” awards.
