Kennedy Ohene Agyapong, an outspoken member of parliament for Assin Central and candidate for the party’s presidential nomination, has criticized the Electoral Commission (EC) for choosing to use the Ghana Card as the only form of identification for registration in the general elections of 2024.
For all new registrants to the nation’s electoral register, the new Constitutional Instrument (CI) seeks to do away with the guarantor system.
However, the MP claimed that the new CI submitted to Parliament by the Electoral Commission is “bogus” in a media interview on Kumasi’s Sompa FM.

He contends that it is illogical to suddenly elevate the Ghana Card above the Ghana Passport when establishing a citizen’s identity.
‘’I am against it. Ghana has people taking bogus decisions. We have a whole Ghana passport, but you (EC) claim that to register to vote you can’t use it to register as a voter. What makes me know that I am a Ghanaian? It is my passport”, he said.
His remarks are unexpected considering that NPP lawmakers had consistently backed the EC’s push to require the Ghana card as the only form of identification when registering voters.
However, as things stand, the NDC MPs are under intense pressure to stay in the house and protest the proposed CI.
