    Labour Party: Everything To Know

UK Labour reshuffle: The winners and losers in Keir Starmer's shake-up – POLITICO

The 2024 General Election presents a choice between a weak and divided Conservative Party, which has been in power for 14 years and failed the people, and a rejuvenated Labour Party led by Keir Starmer. Labour’s mission is to serve working people and transform Britain. Here’s what you need to know:

    History

    Origins and Formation:

      • The Labour Party’s origins trace back to the late 19th century when the urban proletariat (working-class population) grew, and the franchise extended to working-class males.
      • At that time, it became evident that there was a need for a political party to represent the interests and needs of these groups.
      • In 1900, the Trades Union Congress (the national federation of British trade unions) also collaborated with the Independent Labour Party (founded in 1893) to establish the Labour Representation Committee.
      • In 1906, this committee also officially adopted the name Labour Party.
      • Initially, the Labour Party lacked a nationwide mass membership or formal organization.
      • Up until 1914, it made progress primarily through an informal agreement with the Liberal Party not to run candidates against each other wherever possible.
      • After World War I, several factors contributed to the Labour Party’s growth:
        • The Liberal Party faced internal factional disputes.
        • The 1918 Representation of the People Act also extended the electoral franchise to all males aged 21 or older and women aged 30 or older.
        • Also In 1918, Labour reconstituted itself as a formally socialist party with a democratic constitution and a national structure.
      • Since then, the Labour Party has been the major democratic socialist party in Britain, advocating for an active role of the state in economic prosperity and social services. Why you should join the Labour Party today – The Labour Party
