Kamaal Williams, born as Henry Wu on December 14, 1989, is a British musician and record producer. He began his career producing house and broken beat music under the name Henry Wu. Williams rose to prominence alongside drummer Yussef Dayes as Yussef Kamaal, also releasing their acclaimed album “Black Focus” in 2016.
Williams grew up in Peckham, South London, with a Taiwanese mother and British father who worked as architects. His creative pursuits also included an interest in calligraphy, street art, and graffiti culture. Williams also developed a grounding in jazz, funk, and house music, influenced by his father’s introduction to jazz legends like Miles Davis and John Coltrane. He also explored garage and grime music. Williams attended the Bermondsey Centre of Southwark College, studying music production and also learning to play the keyboard. He started gigging around London and later formed a band with Katy B before pursuing his solo music career.
Under the name Kamaal Williams, he has also released three solo albums: “The Return” (2018), “Wu Hen” (2020), and “Stings” (2023). His musical style blends jazz, hip-hop, R&B, and EDM, which he also playfully dubs “Wu Funk”. Williams emphasizes improvisation in his live performances. His discography also includes tracks like “New Heights” and “Save Me” from his solo albums.
