Ejisu By-Election: MP Prof Kingsley Nyarko Denies Bribery Allegations

Ejisu by-election: Two EC officials captured allegedly receiving bribe removed

In the aftermath of the Ejisu constituency by-election held on Tuesday, April 30, 2024, a video emerged showing Professor Kingsley Nyarko, the MP for Kwadaso, engaging with electoral officers. The footage captured a moment when Prof. Nyarko placed a white envelope on a table manned by some officers. The incident sparked discussions and allegations that he attempted to bribe the officials.

However, Prof. Nyarko has vehemently denied any wrongdoing. In an interview with pressmen, he clarified that the envelope was not a bribe but an innocent gesture. He emphasized that he would never openly engage in such conduct if he intended to influence the officials. He explained that he was merely trying to feed the two hungry EC officials during the by-election. The incident was captured on camera, and the EC subsequently withdrew the officers involved and referred the matter to the police for investigation. Dr. Nyarko emphasized that he would never openly engage in bribery or attempt to influence the electoral process.

The Electoral Commission (EC) later issued a statement explaining that the envelope contained money for lunch.

Despite the video’s circulation and potential interpretations, Prof. Nyarko maintained his innocence. As a teacher of high repute, he highlighted his track record of discipline and integrity. He expressed confidence in the integrity of EC officials, stating that they are trained, honest, and disciplined individuals who wouldn’t engage in unethical behavior.

Prof. Nyarko also clarified that one does not need a prior relationship to offer a favor, emphasizing that he had not negatively influenced anyone. While optimistic about his party’s candidate winning convincingly, he reiterated his commitment to transparency and compliance with legal procedures.

    Dr. Kingsley Nyarko’s Full Statement:

“It has come to my attention that there is a video in circulation in which I was seen picking a white envelope from my back pocket and dropping it on a table in front of two electoral commission officers. On the 30th of April, 2024, during the Ejisu by-election, I was supervising polling stations in Fumesua. When I reached the Pentecost Church polling station, I learned that the officers hadn’t received their food. I offered to buy them lunch, and they accepted. The envelope contained no bribe; it was a genuine act of goodwill. I respect the EC’s integrity and would never compromise it.”

The incident remains under investigation, and Prof. Nyarko expressed readiness to cooperate if required.
