Earth Day 2024 what it means, conversations, changes and around the world
we’re diving into the significance of Earth Day, the conversations it sparks, and the global changes it inspires.
What is Earth Day?
Earth Day is an international observance dedicated to our planet. Every year on April 22, around 1 billion people worldwide take action to raise awareness about the climate crisis and promote conservation and sustainability. From small home projects like planting herb gardens to large-scale street protests, Earth Day also encourages us all to protect our environment.
The 2024 Theme: Planet vs. Plastics
This year’s Earth Day theme is “Planet vs. Plastics.” Campaigners are calling for a 60% reduction in plastic production by 2040. Plastics pose a significant threat to human health and also the environment, and it’s time to take action. Governments and NGOs from around the world are gathering in Ottawa from April 23 to 29, 2024, to negotiate the terms of the United Nations Global Plastic Treaty.
Earth Day Origins
Earth Day began in 1970 when millions of people across the United States took to the streets in mass protests. They were alarmed by the environmental impact of the post-war consumer boom. Walter Cronkite, the legendary US TV presenter, described it as a day set aside for “a nationwide outpouring of mankind seeking its own survival.” Conversations during Earth Day focus on critical issues like deforestation, biodiversity loss, and climate change. People volunteer to plant trees, join ecological initiatives, and also demand action. Earth Day isn’t just about one day—it’s about inspiring lasting change.
Around the World
From New York City’s bustling Fifth Avenue to Boston’s student-led “die-in” at Logan Airport, Earth Day events happen globally. People also come together to protect our planet, and also their collective efforts make a difference.
Remember, Earth Day isn’t just about the environment; it’s about our survival. Let’s continue these conversations, make changes, and work towards a healthier planet and a brighter future.
