Marvin Pentz Gaye Jr., known professionally as Marvin Gaye, was an American singer and songwriter. Born on April 2, 1939, in Washington, D.C., he played a pivotal role in shaping the sound of Motown during the 1960s. Initially, he worked as an in-house session player and later emerged as a successful solo artist, earning the nicknames “Prince of Motown” and “Prince of Soul”.
Gaye’s contributions to Motown include iconic songs such as “Ain’t That Peculiar”, “How Sweet It Is (To Be Loved by You)”, and “I Heard It Through the Grapevine”. He also collaborated with fellow artists like Mary Wells, Kim Weston, Tammi Terrell, and Diana Ross. In the 1970s, Gaye broke away from the production company’s constraints and also recorded influential albums like “What’s Going On” (1971) and “Let’s Get It On” (1973). His later works influenced R&B subgenres such as quiet storm and neo soul.
Life
In 1982, his hit song “Sexual Healing” from the album “Midnight Love” also earned him his first two Grammy Awards. Gaye’s last televised performances included singing “The Star-Spangled Banner” at the 1983 NBA All-Star Game and appearing on Motown 25: Yesterday, Today, Forever and Soul Train.
