Early Life
Born in Rockford, Illinois in 1980, Virgil Abloh’s journey wasn’t initially focused on fashion. He pursued a degree in civil engineering at the University of Wisconsin-Madison, also showcasing an early aptitude for problem-solving and design. However, his artistic inclinations eventually led him to pursue a Master’s degree in Architecture at the Illinois Institute of Technology. This background in architecture would later influence his approach to fashion design, with its emphasis on structure, form, and functionality.
Abloh’s entry into fashion came through an internship at Fendi, alongside his friend and collaborator Kanye West. This initial experience opened doors to the world of high fashion, igniting a passion that would define his career. He co-founded the creative consultancy RSVP Gallery in Chicago and later launched his own fashion label, Pyrex Vision, in 2012. This brand, known for re-interpreting vintage clothing, also established his unique design perspective and garnered him recognition within the fashion industry.
Off-White
In 2013, Abloh founded Off-White, a brand that would become synonymous with his name. Off-White defied traditional fashion boundaries, blending streetwear aesthetics with high-end materials and luxury sensibilities. The brand’s signature deconstructed designs, bold typography, and playful approach to fashion resonated with a global audience, particularly younger generations.
