Bola Tinubu of the All Progressives Congress (APC) has been proclaimed the victor of the 2023 presidential election by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).

After four days of compiling the results of the February 25 election at the National Collation Centre in Abuja, the commission’s chairman, Prof. Mahmood Yakubu, declared the former Lagos governor the winner.

Atiku Abubakar of the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) and Peter Obi of the Labour Party (LP) both won 12 states across the nation, but Tinubu received more votes overall. He shared this victory with his two closest competitors.

With 8,794,726 votes, the third republican senator defeated Atiku, who came in second with 6,984,520, and Obi, who came in third with 6,101,533.

The INEC’s handling of the election has drawn a stern rebuke from the LP and PDP, who also disapproved of the collation process for lacking sufficient transparency. They demanded Yakubu’s resignation, declared the election invalid, and accused the APC of rigging the results.

The election is the most hotly contested one since 1999, when democracy was restored in Nigeria. Despite losing his home state of Lagos, Tinubu rebounded with victories in crucial states like Rivers, Zamfara, Borno, Jigawa, Kogi, and Kwara. Additionally, he prevailed in Benue, Ekiti, Niger, Ogun, Ondo, and Oyo.

In addition to winning in his home state of Adamawa, Atiku also triumphed in the states of Akwa Ibom, Bauchi, Bayelsa, Gombe, Kaduna, Katsina, Kebbi, Osun, Sokoto, Taraba, and Yobe.

Obi made his way through the states of Abia, Anambra, Ebonyi, Enugu, and

The president-elect and vice-president-elect, Kashim Shettima, will receive their certificates of return from INEC at 3 p.m. on March 1, 2023.
