The NPP flagbearer Alhaji Dr. Mahamadu Bawumia is being urged by the Council of Zongo Chiefs to appoint Dr. Matthew Opoku Prempeh, the Energy Minister and Manhyia South MP, as his running mate.
Following the Magrib prayers on Friday, January 19, 2024, at Kantudu, behind the Kumasi Central Mosque, the zongo chiefs prayed to Allah for the NPP’s victory in the 2024 general elections. They also prayed for Dr. Bawumia to appoint Dr. Opoku Prempeh, MP for Manhyia South and Energy Minister, as his running mate in the forthcoming elections.
The chiefs said that Dr. Opoku Prempeh was Dr. Bawumia’s ideal partner to advance Ghana to the next level by 2025.
After the Quran was recited, Chief of Frafra and President of the Council of Zongo Chiefs, Alhaji Musah, spoke on behalf of the prayer group, saying that they were praying for Drs. Bawumia and Prempeh because they had the spiritual capacity to take Ghana to the next level.
“It is our wish that Dr. Bawumia will be sworn in as president on January 7, 2025, with Dr. NAPO as his vice president. I know that our toil tonight in this recitation will not be in vain,” Alhaji Musah said
He continued “Dr. Matthew Opoku Prempeh is our brother, and we ask Dr. Bawumia, who himself is a Zongo boy, to select him for them to take Ghana forward.”
Political pundits claim that the Energy Minister’s national appeal is demonstrated by the Council of Zongo Chiefs’ endorsement and prayer. It is worth noting that the Energy Minister was named after an Asante Islamic cleric named Nana Poku, which is how NAPO got its name.
Additionally, Dr. Opoku Prempeh is known to have preached that candidates should be chosen on the basis of their qualifications, which is a formula for fostering national cohesion and unity free from superfluous religious influences.
