The news that former president John Dramani Mahama plans to lead the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC) in the upcoming general elections has prompted a response from the ruling New Patriotic Party (NPP).
The NPP’s communications director, Richard Ahiagbah, says the good news is that they have beaten Mr. Mahama twice.

After the nomination form had been picked up on Mr. Mahama’s behalf, Mr. Ahiagbah made the following statement to journalists in Accra: “The NPP will win the 2024 election.”
When asked if the NPP was concerned about Mr. Mahama’s decision to run for office in 2024, Mr. Ahiagbah responded that the NPP had already defeated Mr. Mahama twice, so it wouldn’t be difficult or unexpected to defeat him this time.
“We have beaten him twice, so you just conclude for yourself if we are afraid of him. It is all mathematical, and we have defeated him twice. He is even afraid to plainly declare whether he is going to contest or not. We are ready for him.”
According to Mr. Ahiagbah, the NPP is not concerned about John Mahama, whom they are certain will be defeated, and is instead only concerned about how to strengthen Ghana’s economy.

“We are interested in how we can build our economy, and we want to know whether he has the solution because we saw him vanquish the gains that he got, and we saw him collapse our economy and banking sector. He doesn’t have what it takes to improve Ghana because if he had what it took to do that, he wouldn’t have vanquished our economic gains and taken us to the IMF.”
On Tuesday, John Dramani Mahama announced that he would be running for the position of NDC flagbearer. Joshua Alabi, his former campaign manager, and other NDC officials chose his nomination form on his behalf.
