National Democratic Congress (NDC) flagbearer and former president, John Dramani Mahama has reiterated his promise to pay allowances to Assembly members if voted into power.

According to Mr. Mahama, the President’s office budget alone is more than GH¢2 billion, therefore he would reduce the President’s office expenditure to pay the Assembly members to help carry out their responsibilities.

Mr. Mahama further added that all Assembly members would receive GH¢1,000 in monthly allowances from the incoming NDC administration.

According to him, the country would have to spend GH¢80 million annually on allowance payments.

Speaking in Hohoe to wrap up his two-day tour to the Volta Region titled “Building the Ghana we want together,” Mr. Mahama stated: “The office of the President’s budget alone is more than GH¢2 billion. We are going to reduce the President’s office expenditure to pay the Assembly members.”

Recall, Mr. John Mahama vowed to continue paying allowances to the newly elected Assembly members if he is voted into power in 2024 elections.

The NDC flagbearer took to his X (formerly Twitter) page to congratulate all Assembly members and Unit Committee who were elected in the December district level elections on December 19, 2023.

Mr. Mahama also exhorted them to put in a lot of effort and actively participate in the nation’s development.

Ahead of the general elections in 2024, Mr. John Mahama has declared that his promises are being evaluated.

Mahama said he couldn’t make big promises because of the status of the economy right now.

He made these comments while speaking to some NDC faithfuls in Hohoe in the Volta Region.

“…I am being very measured in the promises that I make because we all know the crisis in which this country has been plunged [into]. We will show you the books and finances of this country, and you will realise the harm that the New Patriotic Party administration has done this country, the economy is broke.”
