With his dreadlocks, Rastafarian student Tyrone Marhguy was turned away from Achimota School. Now, he’s accomplished an amazing thing in the West Africa Senior Schools Certificate Examination (WASSCE).
In 2021, Marhguy and Oheneba Nkrabea, a fellow Rastafarian student who also encountered initial rejection, made headlines and sparked a national conversation about individual rights and religious freedom.
The court ordered Achimota School to admit both Rastafarian students, stressing the protection of their fundamental human rights, following weeks of uncertainty and a legal battle that went all the way to the Human Rights Court.
After the resolution, Marhguy was able to join the school’s team and compete in the 2023 National Science and Math Quiz in addition to being admitted into Achimota School.

Marhguy’s journey has recently included an exceptional academic chapter. Marhguy did exceptionally well on the WASSCE, earning an A1 in every subject he took on. This accomplishment not only demonstrates his intelligence and commitment, but it also shows the strength of resiliency and willpower.
Social media is now a focal point of the national conversation about the Achimota controversy, with Marhguy being hailed as a hero who overcomes hardship. His scholarly accomplishments bring a fresh perspective to the current discussion surrounding religious liberty and cultural tolerance in schools.
The Human Rights Court’s May 2021 decision rejected the idea of restricting access to education on the basis of appearance or religious beliefs and stressed the value of preserving individual rights. A precedent has been set by Marhguy and Nkrabea’s legal victory, which emphasizes diversity and inclusivity in Ghana’s educational system.
As more people become inspired by Marhguy’s story, attention is drawn to the wider ramifications of the court’s ruling and the continuous initiatives to create a school climate that upholds the identities and rights of every student, regardless of their cultural or religious background. Tyrone Marhguy’s accomplishments are a source of inspiration and a reminder that perseverance and tenacity can overcome initial obstacles to achieve success.
