Finance Minister Ken Ofori-Atta today, Thursday 16 February, appeared before Parliament about the controversial domestic debt exchange programme.

The Speaker of Parliament ordered the Finance Minister after the MP of North Tongu raised the matter in the house.

Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa’s concern is that retired bondholders are protesting at the finance ministry for an exemption from the scheme.

Deputy Majority Leader Alexander Afenyo-Markin, presenting the parliament’s business statement last Friday, said the minister needed to appear before parliament to give answers to questions brought up constituents of members of the chamber.

“Mr. Speaker, on the issue of the DDEP, pursuant to your directive, we engaged the Finance Minister, and we have his assurance to be here on Thursday, February 16, 2023,” the Effutu MP said.

The DDE was strongly opposed by groups and individuals after its announcement.

But at the end of the fiscal year, the Ministry of Finance said it had reached 85% of the target.
