A $338 million loan designated for the renovation and extension of the Accra-Tema Motorway project has been approved by Parliament.

The decision to launch this massive project was prompted by the motorway’s rapid deterioration, which was causing frequent traffic jams and accidents.

The redevelopment project includes significant construction activities on the 5.7 km section of the George Walker Bush Highway and a portion of the Nsawam road, which link the Neoplan Interchange to Apenkwa.

The primary goal of the project is to resolve the current issues and improve the general performance of these important thoroughfares.

Kennedy Osei Nyarko, the chairman of the Roads and Transport Committee, revealed that this ambitious project has a 30-year concession period.

A 36-month construction timeline is projected, and detailed plans are in place to guarantee the expansion and extensive restoration of important sections.

The media was previously notified by Parliament’s Vice-Chairman of the Finance Committee, Patrick Boamah, about the upcoming loan agreement that was up for approval. Boamah explained the project’s scope by saying, “The Accra-Tema motorway alone is 19.5 kilometers, but this project is 27.7 kilometers, so one may ask, where are you getting the remainder from?”

He further elaborated, “The entire project is divided into three sections. The first section is the Accra-Tema Motorway, which is 19.5 kilometers, and it is going to be the rehabilitation and expansion of a minimum of 10 lanes on the motorway. Then, the second section is N1, the George Walker Bush highway, and the scope is 5.7 kilometers. The third scope is the Nsawam road, involving the rehabilitation of the existing six lanes on the Nsawam road.”

Boamah highlighted the program’s comprehensive nature and provided an estimated timeline of at least three years, subject to project progress.

Maripoma Limited and the Ghana Infrastructure Fund are expected to work together on this project, which demonstrates their shared dedication to the effective completion of this important infrastructure improvement.
