Ghana’s Lithium Mining Deal
Samuel Abu Jinapor, Minister for Lands and Natural Resources, has addressed concerns surrounding the government’s lithium mining deal with Barari DV Limited. In a press conference, he provided details and rationale behind the agreement, emphasizing its potential to benefit Ghana’s economy.
Unprecedented 10% Royalties:
This marks a significant increase from existing royalty rates in the mining sector, also ensuring Ghana receives a substantial share of the profits.
19% State Participation:
The government will hold a 19% stake in the mining operation, further enhancing its financial gain and influence over the project.
“This is an unprecedented agreement that will see Ghana receiving a 10% royalty on lithium mined, which is significantly higher than existing royalty rates in the mining sector,”Jinapor said during a press conference. “Additionally, the government will hold a 19% stake in the mining operation, further enhancing our financial gain and influence over the project.”
Prioritization of Local Value Addition:
The agreement stipulates that a significant portion of the lithium mined will be processed and refined locally. Also creating jobs and fostering the growth of a local lithium industry.
Community Development Fund:
Barari DV Limited is obligated to contribute 1% of its revenue to a dedicated community development fund, supporting the upliftment and also social infrastructure of the mining area.
“We are committed to ensuring that a significant portion of the lithium mined is processed and refined locally,” Jinapor said. “This will create jobs and foster the growth of a local lithium industry, which is also essential for our long-term economic development.”
Barari DV Limited has also committed to contributing 1% of its revenue to a dedicated community development fund.
“This fund will support the upliftment and social infrastructure of the mining area,” Jinapor said.
Environmental Safeguards:
Stringent environmental regulations will also be enforced throughout the mining process, ensuring minimal ecological impact and responsible resource extraction.
“We believe that this project has the potential to create jobs, boost our economy. And help us develop a thriving local lithium industry,” Jinapor said. “We are committed to ensuring that this project is implemented responsibly and that the benefits are shared by all Ghanaians.”

He also emphasized the importance of due diligence. Also stating that the government carefully evaluated several proposals before selecting Barari DV as its partner.
