The Kaneshie District Court has placed Shalimar Abbiusi, a foreign national who is allegedly connected to a recently formed political organization called “The New Force,” back into the legal custody of the government.
The Ghana Immigration Service (GIS) arraigned her.
Instead of accepting the accused person’s plea, the Kaneshie District court read the case in public.
The Belgian representative of “The New Force,” Abbiusi, is being detained on suspicion of “obtaining for yourself a student permit by false declaration.”
The accused, The New Force Spokesperson was placed under lawful custody and ordered to return on Monday, December 11, 2023, after the court granted the prosecution several days to wrap up their investigations.
The defense attorney requested bail, arguing that his client posed no risk of running away.
Counsel stated that since the accused person’s passport was registered with GIS, the Service ought to be able to track her whereabouts.
The New Force Spokesperson had men of substance to stand as sureties, according to the counsel.
In order to allow the State to determine the accused person’s purpose in the nation and her activities, the prosecution, led by Assistant Commissioner of Immigration Adolf Aboagye Asenso, asked the court to remand the accused.
The State required time, according to the prosecutor, to reach a reasonable conclusion regarding her participation in national politics.
The prosecution claimed that the accused person’s propensity to meddle with the testimony and actions of other witnesses was very high.
The prosecution’s case involved the accused person obtaining a student permit through false declaration because “she is not a student in any of the schools in Ghana”.
Prosecution said, “as we speak, she is an illegal immigrant, so the court cannot grant bail to an illegal immigrant because the court would be perpetuating illegality.”
The New Force Spokesperson was detained in response to an invitation from the Head of National Enforcement Section at the GIS headquarters regarding her immigration status in the nation, according to the facts presented to the court.
The prosecution claimed that the accused’s social media activity drew the attention of the GIS.
The accused was allegedly discovered in a brief video that was going around announcing the formation of a brand-new political organization known as “The New Force.”
According to the prosecution, the defendant identified herself as The New Force Spokesperson.
The prosecution informed the court that further investigation showed that the accused arrived in Ghana for the first time on September 4, 2017, via the Kotoka International Airport (KIA), and that she continued to visit the nation frequently until 2018, when she allegedly moved in as a student at Ghana University College and became a resident.
Checks from the College, according to the prosecutor, showed that she had never attended.
It claimed that the documents she submitted with her application for a residency permit, which were supposedly issued by the College, were fake.
