He grew up playing basketball under the tutelage of his father, Dave Holmgren, who stood 7 feet (2.1 m) tall and who also played college basketball for the University of Minnesota from 1984 to 1988. In sixth grade (aged 11–12), Holmgren also began attending Minnehaha Academy. A Christian private school in Minneapolis. He stood 6 ft 2 in (1.88 m) at the time and was teammates with Jalen Suggs, whom he would play alongside through high school.
Holmgren improved his shooting range while recovering from a broken right wrist during his first season. He averaged 21.4 points, 11.9 rebounds, 4.7 blocks, and also 4.1 assists per game as a sophomore, and was named to the USA Basketball Men’s Junior National Select Team. As a junior, Holmgren averaged 23.8 points, 13.4 rebounds, 5.8 blocks, and 3.8 assists per game, and was also named to the McDonald’s All-American Game and the Jordan Brand Classic.
