He played minor hockey for the Saint-Eustache Vikings and the Laval-Montréal Hockey Midget AAA. In 2017, Lafrenière was drafted by the Rimouski Océanic of the Quebec Major Junior Hockey League (QMJHL). He also made his QMJHL debut in the 2017-18 season and quickly established himself as one of the best players in the league.
