In closing remarks, former minister of food and agriculture and flagbearer hopeful Dr. Owusu Afriyie Akoto pledged to bring the party together to “Break the eight” if chosen to lead the ruling New Patriotic Party (NPP) in the November 4th presidential primary.
He claims that in order to avoid sowing division within the party, his campaign team ran a clean campaign. In his opinion, that positions him as the ideal candidate to bring the party together before the general elections in 2024.
Out of the ten candidates, Dr. Afriyie Akoto, who resigned as the minister of food and agriculture, came in fourth at the Super Delegates conference on August 26, 2023.
At a press conference in the Greater Accra Region, the former Agriculture Minister declared his campaign’s end with three (3) days remaining before the primary election date.
Speaking to the media, Dr. Afriyie Akoto stated that if the party is serious about breaking the eight, then unity both inside and outside of its ranks would be necessary.
“As your flagbearer, fellow delegates I intend to invite both former members and non-members of this party to join us for the historic victory on December 7th 2024.”
Dr. Akoto passionately pleaded with the delegates to turn down aspirants’ offers of large sums of money and other gifts in response to claims of vote buying and deception, saying that doing so would not benefit them or their offspring in the long run.
“Dear delegates, please look beyond any tempting one-off monetary enticement and think about the future of the party for the sake of your children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren”, he said.
