Jaylon Johnson was born on April 19, 1999, in Fresno, California. He grew up in a sports-loving family, and his father, James Johnson, played college football at the University of Oklahoma. Jaylon also began playing football at a young age, and he quickly developed into one of the best players in his age group.
In high school, Johnson played football and basketball at Central High School in Fresno. He was a two-time all-state selection in football, and he was also a member of the 2017 US Army All-American Bowl team. Johnson was also a standout basketball player, and he was named the Central Valley League MVP in his senior year.
After graduating from high school, Johnson was also recruited by several top universities. He ultimately decided to attend the University of Utah, where he played cornerback for the Utes. Johnson was a two-time All-Pac-12 selection at Utah, and he was also named the Pac-12 Defensive Freshman of the Year in 2018.
