Dame Judi Dench is an English actress and author. She is one of the most respected and celebrated actresses of her generation. Dench has won numerous awards throughout her career, including an Academy Award, a Golden Globe Award, two Screen Actors Guild Awards, and seven British Academy Television Awards.
She was born on December 9, 1934, in York, England. Her parents, Reginald Arthur Dench and Eleanora Olive (née Jones), were both actors. Dench attended Mount School in York and then trained at the Central School of Speech and Drama in London.
She made her professional debut in 1957 in the Shakespeare play “Romeo and Juliet” at the Old Vic Theatre. She went on to appear in many other Shakespeare plays, including “Hamlet,” “Macbeth,” and “King Lear.” Dench also starred in a number of other plays, including “A Streetcar Named Desire,” “Who’s Afraid of Virginia Woolf?,” and “The Cherry Orchard.“
Dench made her film debut in 1964 in the film “Four in the Morning.” She has since appeared in many other films, including “A Room with a View” (1985), “Shakespeare in Love” (1998), “Chocolat” (2000), “Iris” (2001), “Mrs. Henderson Presents” (2005), “Notes on a Scandal” (2006), “Nanny McPhee” (2006), “Quantum of Solace” (2008), “Skyfall” (2012), and “Victoria & Abdul” (2017).
Dench is also a successful television actress. She has starred in a number of television series, including “Cranford” (2007-2009), “As Time Goes By” (1992-2005), and “A Fine Romance” (1999-2001).
Dench has written two books: “And Furthermore” (2010) and “Let Me Tell You a Story” (2018).
