The Assemblies of God in Ghana have demanded a long-term solution to the problem of communities flooding whenever the nation’s dams overflow.
The Assemblies of God claimed that in order to accomplish this, practical engineering solutions must be sought, public education on disaster prevention must be intensified, and effective sanctions must be taken against those responsible for environmental degradation.
Even though the church supported calls for a state of emergency to be declared, it emphasized the need for those solutions. “if we decide, as a nation, to be serious in finding long-term answers to the flooding and other nagging environmental questions.”
Speaking to the media yesterday at the church’s headquarters in Accra, Rev. Dr. Stephen Wengam, the general superintendent of the church, further demanded that the current measures being taken to control the depressing situation receive the necessary legislative and humanitarian weight.
“In addition to prayers, rigid application of science and technology should play a frontal role in dealing with the risks to human lives and property in the flood-prone areas.
“We believe finding a permanent solution to the impact of flood waters, any time there’s a spillage of water from any of the dams in Ghana will be most welcome” Rev. Dr Wengam stressed.
While the press conference’s primary purpose was to inform the media of the results of the World Congress of the Assemblies of God World Fellowship that just concluded in Madrid, Spain, the church also took the opportunity to address the media about the heartbreaking scenes in the flood-affected areas.
The church’s intention to donate GH $20,000 and other supplies to help the victims in their plight was announced by the A-G Ghana General Superintendent.
