Former President and NDC 2024 flagbearer, John Mahama has criticized President Nana Akufo-Addo for the way the government has handled the Akosombo dam spillage which has displaced thousands of people.
Many communities in the North, South, and Central Tongu districts of the Volta Region were forced to evacuate due to flooding brought on by this spillage, leaving them with no choice but to salvage what they could of their possessions.
According to Mahama, the approach of President Akufo-Addo led NPP government has been a bit lackadaisical. The former president said he visited the affected communities so that the government would see reality of the situation.
Mr. Mahama assessed the spillage’s effects during his visit to some areas of Sogakope and Sokpoe on Friday. He also met with affected communities and facilities. Due to the dire circumstances, the Comboni Hospital staff had to leave their quarters and seek refuge under a pavilion.
Only ten patients remain in critical condition, so if the water levels don’t drop soon, they might also need to be discharged, which would be a heartbreaking decision. Patients were also discharged.

“I think government’s approach has been a bit lackadaisical, I actually that is why I came so that it will help them see that this is real. Sometimes when you read in the media you think that this is a joke, but these are people life,” he said.

John Mahama meanwhile urged the Volta River Authority (VRA) to step up its efforts to aid the citizens of communities along the Volta River who have been harmed by the spillage from the Akosombo Dam.
“This is about people’s lives. I will thank the VRA and appeal to them to expedite their efforts because the people are in need. We must help them cope with the situation.”
