Selma Blair was born on June 23, 1972, in Southfield, Michigan, to Elliot Blair, a salesman, and Molly Ann (née Cooke), a nurse. She has one younger sister, Katherine Blair. Blair’s parents divorced when she was young and she was raised by her mother.
Blair attended Hillel Day School, a Jewish day school in Farmington Hills, Michigan, and Cranbrook Kingswood school in Bloomfield Hills, Michigan. She then spent two years (1990–1992) studying photography at Kalamazoo College. At age 21, Blair moved to New York City, where she lived at The Salvation Army.
Blair began her acting career in the early 1990s, appearing in several television shows and films, including “The X-Files” (1995), “Friends” (1996), and “Scream 2” (1997). Her breakthrough role came in 1999, when she starred in the film “Cruel Intentions.” She went on to star in several successful films, including “Legally Blonde” (2001), “Hellboy” (2004), and “The Fog” (2005).
