Claims that Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia had promised some people running mate slots have been refuted by Sammi Awuku, CEO of the National Lotteries Authority (NLA).

He claimed that no member of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) had ever played such a role on the Vice President’s campaign team.

He stressed that Dr. Bawumia is focused on the upcoming November 4 elections and has avoided mentioning a running mate throughout his political career in an interview on Peace FM in Accra.

“I can also speak with authority that, at no point in time have we spoken about a running mate matter, never, at the campaign level, whether private or public, official or unofficial. We are now waiting for November 4, so how do you discuss a running mate when you don’t know your fate?” Mr. Sammi Awuku said.

He went on to explain that, in accordance with the party’s constitution, the choice of a running mate is something that is taken into account only after Dr. Bawumia wins the position of flagbearer.

He said that the candidate and the national council would discuss the selection of a running mate after consulting with one another.

Bawumia will compete for the position of flagbearer against Kennedy Agyapong, Dr. Owusu Afriyie Akoto, and Francis Addia-Nimoh, in addition to three other candidates.

The NPP has set November 4, 2023, as the date to choose a new party leader to succeed President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo.

In a related news, the NPP’s flagbearer candidate Kennedy Agyapong has come under fire from a group of market women at the Kumasi Central Market for recent remarks he made while campaigning.

The Assin Central MP allegedly engaged in tribal politics during his weekend “Showdown Walk” in Kumasi, according to trader groups.

Akans and Northerners are not welcome in Ghana, according to a representative of the “NPP Identifiable Groups at Kumasi Central Market, Kejetia and Race Course” in a video that has gone viral on social media.

She asserts that Ghana belongs to all Ghanaians and that tribal politics have no place in the nation.
